Here are some hard-hitting consumer tips, intended to help you avoid some common pitfalls of online insurance shopping. Tip #1 is rarely seen elsewhere. If you find them to be of value, please share with family and friends.
On-line Insurance Shopping Tip #1... Stay in control of the insurance shopping process!
Today, most insurance quote-Websites ask for or your full name, home address, e-mail address, and telephone number. But in reality, only your Zip Code is required (along with other preliminary information) for any insurance company to provide you with a reasonably accurate insurance quote.
Be very careful. Many Websites are only in the business of selling your name and personal information to outside insurance agents. Typically, all data collected is sold many times.
It's OK to give personal information online (health history, financials, etc.) if you do so anonymously.
It's OK to give your information to an insurance company representative or to a local insurance agent, as long as you know exactly with whom you are dealing.
Don't allow someone you don't know decide which insurance agents will call your home, and when. Rather, seek out a good insurance agent when you are ready. (See Local Agents for some tips.) Stay in control of the insurance shopping process.
Same insurance company... same policy... but 2 websites show different rates! Here's why:
It's not uncommon for two different quote-Websites to provide you with different rates for the exact same insurance policy, from the exact same insurance company. Which Website is correct?
The fact is that when shopping online, in most cases, you will rarely receive an accurate and final rate quote on the first query. (This is especially true for life insurance, but is often also the case for health insurance and car insurance.) This is why we recommend that you shop two or more quote-Websites (while keeping in mind Tip #1 above) to establish a range of insurance quotes. (Then contact a good local agent to verify.)
There are a number of variables in the pricing of insurance. Only when an insurance company has all pertinent information can a final rate be given. Most online Websites do not ask for all of the information required (because they'd lose too many visitors), only enough for a "ball park" estimate.
